Why Organic?

Everyone knows that most commercially grown produce is sprayed with chemicals.  Chemicals are used to help germination, prevent weeds, prevent disease, kill pests, delay ripening, speed up ripening, promote eye appeal, promote shelf life, etc. etc.  Many of these chemicals are very hazardous to human life, not to mention detrimental to the earth.  Food that is produced in this way looks great, tastes okay (sometimes worse) and is devoid of nutrients.  In order to produce nutrient-rich food, a few basic principles must be followed that large commercial producers don't follow.  In addition to the myriad of chemicals used on our food, many seeds are being genetically modified.  The seed producers are changing the genetic make up of the seeds.  There is no way to really know the impact that this will have on us as the consumers, and many varieties of vegetables will be lost.  Over the next several years, all seeds may be lost and only the genetically modified ones will remain, with no way to get back the original.  The bottom line for most conventional commercial growers is profit.  And everything they do is geared to this end.  We can't blame them, after all, they want to make a living; but, we can do better for ourselves, our children and our planet.

Food that is grown organically is free from hazardous chemicals, full of nutrition, and absolutely delicious.  When you grow it in your own backyard, you don't have to pick it unripe for transport and/or shelf life.  You pick it ripe right off the vine.  This gives you maximum flavor and nutrition.  If you buy your seeds and seedlings carefully, you can also avoid genetically modified seeds and plants.  In this way you can save your seeds from year to year which strengthens the variety, promotes diversity, and saves you money!  Not only will you save money by growing your own organic produce, but you will be protecting your health as well.  How many chemicals currently used in food production contain carcinogens (cancer causing substances)?   Using organic gardening techniques will give you the peace of mind that you are providing your family with the healthiest, safest, and tastiest food that can be found. Subscribe to my free e-newsletter on the "contact me" page to find out how you can become a successful organic gardener!
